Building Smarter Grain Infrastructure for South Australia’s Future
When it comes to moving and storing grain, reliability, speed, and efficiency aren’t “nice to haves” — they’re critical to protecting hard‑earned harvests and keeping costs under control. That’s exactly what drove the Wallaroo project in South Australia.
Allied Grain Systems were proud to be contracted by T Ports to design and deliver one of the most modern, automated, and cost‑effective grain handling facilities in the region. From the outset, the brief was clear: build a system purpose‑designed for its application, capable of handling large volumes efficiently. While also being able to stand up to the realities of Australian conditions and harvest pressures.
Construction commenced in 2021 and was completed later that same year. With the result being a future‑ready commercial facility that supports faster turnaround, reduced handling losses, and dependable grain export capability.
Designed for Throughput, Protection, and Efficiency
At the heart of the Wallaroo installation are two fully sealed 10,000‑tonne silos, purpose‑built to protect grain quality from receival through to out‑loading. Fully sealed storage provides improved pest control options, reduced spoilage risk, and greater confidence that grain is delivered to market in top condition — something every grower understands the value of.
The intake side of the system was engineered to keep trucks moving, even at peak harvest pressure. With a 1,000 tonne‑per‑hour intake system and dual road hoppers, the site can handle high traffic volumes efficiently, reducing waiting times and keeping logistics flowing when timing matters most.
On the export side, a 1,500 tonne‑per‑hour ship out‑loading system ensures grain moves quickly and smoothly from storage to vessel. Faster loading means tighter shipping windows can be met and bottlenecks minimised — a win for the entire supply chain.
Automation That Works for People on the Ground
The entire facility is supported by full automation, designed to make operations safer, more consistent, and easier to manage. Automated controls improve accuracy, reduce manual handling, and allow operators to monitor and manage the system with confidence, even during long harvest days.
For professionally run farming operations, projects like Wallaroo demonstrate how modern infrastructure investment supports long‑term sustainability — protecting grain quality, reducing handling costs, and ensuring Australian growers remain competitive on the global stage.
At Allied Grain Systems, we believe the best systems are the ones that simply work — season after season, harvest after harvest.
